Composting is the decomposition of organic material into simpler forms
carried out biologically with the help of microorganisms under aerobic conditions
or requiring controlled oxygen. The effective microorganism 4 solution,
abbreviated as EM4, was first discovered by Prof. Dr. Teuro Higa from the
University of the Ryukyus, Japan. This EM4 solution contains fermentation
microorganisms. An experiment in making compost was carried out in the H.
Badaruddin Kasim Maburai Hospital, Tabalong Regency, using a Takakura basket
composting container using EM-4 liquid with composting materials found nearby
such as kitchen waste and Trembesi tree leaves. The experiment itself was said to
have been unsuccessful due to several factors, including a lack of literacy on how
to make compost or a lack of understanding of the composting time itself. The aim
of this research was to determine the effect of giving Bioactivator EM-4 (Effective
Microorganisms) on the ripening time of compost from organic waste from the
Nutrition Installation waste.
This type of research is experimental with a post-test only control group design.
Data collection was carried out by collecting materials, administering EM-4 for
each treatment, observing and recording. The data obtained were analyzed using
Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT).
The results of the Anova test showed P<0.05, H0 was rejected so that there was
a significant difference in treatment (P0, P1, P2, and P3) on compost ripening time
with or without EM-4 bioactivator. To further investigate which treatments were
significant, Duncan's test was carried out. The results of the Duncan test showed
that the ripening time for compost P0 (without the addition of Bioactivator EM-4)
was significantly different from the ripening time for compost P1, P2, and P3 which
used Bioactivator EM-4, and P1, P2 and P3 which also used Bioactivator EM-4.
have significant differences in compost maturation time.
Based on the research results, this research not only succeeded in proving the
effect of EM-4 bioactivator on accelerating compost ripening time, but also showed
xi
the effectiveness of different doses, where the highest dose gave the most optimal
results.
