ABSTRACT
Relationship between Long Work and Morphological Abnormalities in Public
Fuel Filling Station (SPBU) Officers
Researcher: Resza Monica

Gas station attendants are a group of workers who are at risk of exposure to
dangerous chemicals, especially lead from petrol and motor vehicle gas emissions.
Lead is a type of dangerous heavy metal. Lead that is inhaled and enters the
respiratory system will circulate throughout the body's tissues and organs. Elevated
lead levels in the blood will disrupt erythropoiesis by inhibiting protoporphyrin
synthesis, thereby increasing the risk of anemia caused by lead affecting the
morphology and viability of erythrocytes. The aim of this research was to determine
the relationship between length of work and erythrocyte morphology abnormalities
in gas station officers in Banjarbaru. This type of research is an analytical survey
research with a cross sectional research design, the research sample was 30 gas
station officers using a purposive sampling technique. Data on erythrocyte
abnormalities was obtained from microscopic examination with results showing 17
respondents (56.67%) with normal erythrocyte abnormalities, and 13 respondents
(43.33%) with abnormal erythrocyte abnormalities. Respondents who had worked
for < 5 years were 14 people (46.67%), and those who had worked > 5 years were
16 people (53.33%). The results of the sperm rank coefficient test show that there
is a strong relationship between length of work and erythrocyte morphology
abnormalities in gas station officers with a value (p-value 0.00) < (0.05). For
respondents to be able to anticipate maintaining a healthy diet, reducing smoking
habits, and continuing to use PPE, it is hoped that future researchers will also be
able to add HB examination besides checking for erythrocyte abnormalities.
