PENGARUH ARANG AKTIF CANGKANG BIJI KETAPANG (Terminalia catappa) TERHADAP KADAR AMONIA PADA AIR LIMBAH INDUSTRI TAHU

Air limbah industri tahu mengandung bahan organik berupa karbohidrat, lemak, dan protein yang akan mengalami perombakan oleh mikroorganisme salah satunya terbentuk amonia. Jika air limbah industri tahu langsung dibuang ke badan air dapat menyebabkan bau yang tidak sedap, gangguan estetika, pencemaran lingkungan dan racun bagi biota akuatik. Maka perlu dilakukan proses pengolahan terlebih dahulu, salah satunya yaitu secara kimia dengan menggunakan arang aktif cangkang biji ketapang (Terminalia catappa). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh arang aktif cangkang biji ketapang (Terminalia catappa) terhadap kadar amonia pada air limbah industri tahu. Jenis penelitian ini adalah Eksperiment dengan rancangan penelitian yaitu Pretest Posttest Design. Bahan penelitian ini adalah air limbah industri tahu dan arang aktif cangkang biji ketapang (Terminalia catappa). Kadar amonia diukur dengan metode Nessler menggunakan spektrofotometer. Kadar amonia air limbah industri tahu tanpa perlakuan dengan arang aktif cangkang biji ketapang sebesar 49,12 mg/L. Dan kadar amonia setelah perlakuan dengan arang aktif cangkang biji ketapang (Terminalia catappa) dengan variasi massa 15 gram (47,29 mg/L); 20 gram (42,31 mg/L); dan 25 gram (40,32 mg/L); dan persentase penurunannya sebesar 15 gram (3,73 %); 20 gram (13,86 %); dan 25 gram (17,92 %). Berdasarkan hasil uji statistik didapatkan p < α (0,000 < 0,05) yang berarti ada pengaruh perlakuan arang aktif cangkang biji ketapang (Terminalia catappa) terhadap kadar amonia pada air limbah industri tahu. Selanjutnya dapat dilakukan pemeriksaan yang sama dengan massa yang lebih tinggi dan juga dengan parameter pemeriksaan yang lain seperti nitrat, nitrit, dan COD.

THE EFFECT OF KETAPANG SEED SHELL ACTIVATED CHARCOAL (Terminalia catappa) ON AMMONIA LEVELS IN WASTE WATER OF TOFU FACTORY

Waste water from the tofu factory contains organic materials such as carbohydrate, fat, and protein. Those will be reorganized by the microorganism and one of the products is ammonia. If the waste water dumped right into the water body, it will make some disturbance such as odors, unpleasing view, pollution, and harming the aquatic creatures. Thus, it is necessary to have a waste processing facility. One of methods of waste processing is done chemically using active charcoal of ketapang seed shell (Terminalia catappa). This research aims to know the effect of ketapang seed shell activated charcoal (Terminalia catappa) on ammonia levels in waste water of tofu factory. This is an experiment research and using the research design of Pretest Posttest Design. The materials of this research are active charcoal of ketapang seed shell (Terminalia catappa) and waste water of tofu factory. The amount of ammonia is measured using the Nessler method and spectrophotometer. Amount of ammonia in the waste water without the treatment of active charcoal of ketapang seed shell (Terminalia catappa) is 49,12 mg/L. Amount of ammonia in the waste water with the treatment of active charcoal of ketapang seed shell (Terminalia catappa) and with the variance as follows: 15 grams  (47,29 mg/L); 20 grams (42,31 mg/L); 25 grams (40,32 mg/L); and the decreasing percentage are in the following: 15 grams (3,73%); 20 grams (13,86%) 25 grams (17,92%). The result of statistics test shows that p < α (0,000 < 0,05) which means there is an effect of using the treatment of active charcoal of ketapang seed shell (Terminalia catappa) on ammonia levels in waste water of tofu factory. Furthermore, it is expected that there is more test with higher mass and also using other test parameter such as nitrite, nitrate and COD.
