Sebagian besar penduduk Indonesia tinggal di daerah pesisir yang merupakan daerah miskin sumber air tawar, sumber daya air di daerah tersebut umumnya berkualitas buruk, seperti tingginya kadar garam. Maka dari itu perlunya pengolahan air untuk penurunan kadar garam. Satu-satunya proses kimia yang dapat menghilangkan klorida dari air adalah proses pertukaran ion.
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perbedaan persentase penurunan kadar klorida artifisial pada variasi kadar klorida awal air payau ( 870 mg/l, 1712 mg/l, 2501 mg/l) dan variasi waktu sampling (1,5 jam, 3 jam, 4,5 jam). Air payau yang digunakan merupakan hasil dari pengenceran air asin dengan air tawar. Proses ini dengan melewatkan air payau ke media resin diameter kolom 5 cm dan tinggi 40 cm dengan debit aliran 100 ml/menit. 
Hasil pemeriksaan kadar klorida sesudah proses masih melebihi baku mutu permenkes RI No.492/MENKES/PER/IV/2010. Rata-rata kadar klorida sesudah pada klorida awal 870 mg/l adalah 776,7 mg/l, pada 1712 mg/l adalah 1520 mg/l dan pada 2501 mg/l adalah 2139 mg/l. Hasil uji statistik Two Way Anova menunjukkan adanya perbedaan persentase penurunan kadar klorida.
Untuk dapat mengoptimalkan hasil pertukaran ion dan dapat mengetahui waktu jenuh media resin, disarankan penelitian lanjutan dengan pengaturan debit pada reaktor yang sama atau pengaturan reaktor dengan debit yang sama. Debit aliran mempengaruhi waktu kontak, pengaturan reaktor pada debit yang sama dapat memperpanjang waktu kontak media resin dengan air payau.

Most of Indonesia's population lives in coastal areas which are poor areas freshwater. Water resources the area are generally of poor quality, such as high salinity. Therefore needed for water treatment to decrease the salt content. The only chemical process that can remove chloride is the ion exchange.
The aim of this study was to determine the difference of percentage decreasing of chloride levels  in variations of chloride level in brackish water (870 mg/l, 1712 mg/l, 2501 mg/l) and variation of sampling time (1,5 hours, 3 hours, 4,5 hours). Brackish water used is the result of dilution of brines using freshwater. This process brackish water by passing into a resin media tube’s diameter 5 cm and 40 cm high with flow discharge  100 ml/min.
The results of chloride levels after the process still exceeded the quality standard Permenkes RI No.492/MENKES/PER/IV/2010. The avarage chloride levels after from the chloride 870 mg/l is 776,7 mg/l, the chloride 1712 mg/l is 1520 mg/l and the chloride 2501 mg/l adalah 2139 mg/l. From Two-Way-Anova test results showed a significant difference between the percentage of decreasing of chloride levels.
To optimize the result of ion exchange and to know the saturation time of the resin media it is advisable for further research by setting the discharge at the same reactor, or setting the reactor at the same discharge. The flow affects the contact time, setting the reactor at the same discharge to prolong the contact time of the resin media with brackish water.
